Ramon Vega, a Swiss centre-back during his Tottenham Hotspur days, used a written statement on 7 October 2026 to declare that he wants to contest FIFA's presidential vote, which BBC Sport says is due next year. Vega, now 55, is so far the only person to have openly confirmed a bid against FIFA president Gianni Infantino, according to BBC Sport and Mundo Deportivo.

Vega's move comes at a difficult moment for Infantino. BBC Sport reports that the FIFA president has ignored demands to resign since his plan to open up part of the World Cup to outside private money collapsed, a proposal that drew fierce criticism throughout the sport.

Why is Ramon Vega running?

Ramon Vega frames his bid around healing divisions in the game, pushing through lasting reform, modernising FIFA and restoring confidence in the organisation. In his view, the sport belongs to players, coaches, referees, fans and clubs rather than to the people who govern it, and he says his life has prepared him to serve football.

“I am standing to reunite the global football family, deliver genuine and lasting reform, modernise Fifa for the 21st Century, restore stability and credibility, and rebuild the trust that our game urgently needs.”

Where does Infantino stand?

Gianni Infantino has refused to step aside even though UEFA, CONCACAF and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) have urged him to go. According to BBC Sport, in September 2026 Infantino insisted he remained "fully committed to leading Fifa". Football Italia argues that his opponents have long lacked a credible alternative, and Vega sees an opening. Like Infantino, Vega is Swiss.

Who is Ramon Vega?

Between 1993 and 2001 Ramon Vega played 23 times for Switzerland, scoring 2 goals. Football Italia says he spent 1996-97 in Serie A with Cagliari before joining Tottenham Hotspur, and later had spells at Celtic, Watford and French club Creteil. The sources differ on when he retired: BBC Sport gives 2004 and says he has worked in finance ever since, while Football Italia gives 2023. Football Italia describes him as founder and CEO of Vega Swiss Asset Management.

Has Vega tried to run for FIFA president before?

This is the third time Ramon Vega has set his sights on the FIFA presidency. He first considered standing in 2015, when Sepp Blatter was suspended. Four years after that he announced a challenge to Infantino, but never made the ballot: a candidate needed support from at least five of the 211 national associations in FIFA, and he could not secure it.

What happens next?

For now Ramon Vega has only stated an intention; to become an official candidate he must win formal backing from member associations. At his previous attempt the bar was five of 211. None of the sources gives a date or venue for the vote, and FIFA has not responded publicly to Vega's statement. ScoreLab will update this article as the race develops.
