The 2027 Asian Cup has been postponed. On 3 November 2026 the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) announced that the continental championship, hosted by Saudi Arabia, would move 11 months later than planned. Originally scheduled for 7 January to 5 February 2027, the tournament is now set to open on 23 December 2027 and end with the final on 21 January 2028. According to BBC Sport and The Guardian, the revised dates still need to be signed off by FIFA.

Why was the Asian Cup postponed?

The Asian Cup was postponed after deadly attacks on host nation Saudi Arabia and the travel problems caused by the wider conflict in the Middle East. BBC Sport reported that 13 people died and more than 300 were hurt when the Houthi group in Yemen fired missiles at the airport in Riyadh in October 2026. Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo, citing the EFE agency, also linked the decision to Houthi attacks on the kingdom, while The Guardian noted that roughly a month of uncertainty had followed the airport strike before the AFC made its call.

The AFC said the decision was taken together with the local organising committee and the Saudi Arabian Football Federation (SAFF). Its statement pointed to exceptional circumstances in the region, significant logistical difficulties and disruption to travel. French sports daily L'Équipe described the move as pushing the tournament back by almost a year.

How did we get here?

The decision ends months of uncertainty over the tournament, which is due to be staged in Jeddah, Riyadh and Al Khobar. In mid-October, AFC president Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa said the event could slip to 2028 if necessary but that there was no rush to decide, while the Saudi organising committee insisted preparations were on track.

  1. March 2026 — The final draw, planned for 11 April in Riyadh, was postponed because of the conflict in the region.
  2. May 2026 — The tournament draw was held.
  3. October 2026 — Houthi missiles hit the airport in Riyadh, leaving 13 dead and more than 300 injured.
  4. 15 October 2026 — The local organising committee said preparations remained on schedule.
  5. 3 November 2026 — The AFC moved the tournament to a 23 December 2027 start, with the final on 21 January 2028.

What does it mean for clubs?

European clubs with Asian internationals gain from the change in the 2026/27 season, as players who would have left for the tournament in January 2027 will now stay with their clubs. BBC Sport pointed to Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki as one example. The new window, however, falls over late December and January of the 2027/28 season, overlapping with the busy festive programme in leagues such as the Premier League. The security situation has hit other events too: the Six Kings Slam tennis exhibition planned for Riyadh was among those cancelled.

What happens next?

The new Asian Cup dates are not yet final: the AFC's proposed window, opening on 23 December 2027 and closing with the 21 January 2028 final, will be submitted to FIFA for approval. FIFA's ruling will matter for the international calendar and for clubs' obligations to release players. None of the sources suggest any change to Saudi Arabia's hosting rights; the AFC statement covers the schedule only. ScoreLab will update this article as the story develops.
